The refurbishment of Ipswich Museum, a Grade II listed building, comprises the reconfiguration of interior spaces with the erection of a north two-storey infill with a new cantilever staircase, a south two-storey infill, new toilet facilities, relocation of the plant room and insertion of a new basement to the entrance lobby, and a new passenger lift. New internal and external ramps and doors are also being installed. Landscaping works are included in the restoration.
Works include the creation of new research and conservation rooms, together with a learning space and new staircase in the north wing. Original features, including cornices, skirtings, floor tiles and floorboards, are being restored along with extensive window repairs. New roof lights will provide natural daylight in areas of the building, while new toilets are being created in the basement.
A large temporary roof allowed for the renovation of the roof, with specialist craftsmen brought in to work on the restoration of weather-damaged terracotta friezes on the front elevation. Internally, a scaffold birdcage provided a platform to enable us to work on the decorative roof interior, all while protecting the Museum’s precious exhibits which cannot be moved, on the ground floor.
