Market Field Special Day School, Elmstead Market

This first floor class base extension was constructed using structural steel framing (with exposed padded steel stilts to provide covered activity space underneath), secondary framing system finished externally with zinc cladding and curtain walling.

Working closely with Market Field Special Day School which remained live throughout, we managed the project to achieve a challenging programme of 34 weeks. To provide safe segregation we constructed a temporary haul road around part of the school playing field and also constructed temporary screening at junctions with the existing school.

We are proud of the excellent feedback received from both Market Field School and the Contract Administrator, Barker Associates about our performance.

“The whole project from start to finish has been fantastic! Gipping construction made everything virtually stress free, all Gipping employees worked with outstanding professionalism. Gipping’s Site Manager, Steve James, has been an absolute Godsend. Communication has been brilliant; constant updates and well-informed on progress. I did not think the extension was going to be completed in time for the children’s return due to COVID 19, but Gipping pulled out all the stops for it to be open on time. Steve ran the site from early morning until the last contractor had finished for the day and is a first class Site Manager. Personal thanks to Julian and Joe for all their hard work on overseeing site management. Phil the machine operator did a fantastic job working alongside Steve. The completed extension is an absolute masterpiece, the attention to detail is brilliant. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gipping for outstanding work, and highly recommend your company.”

Challenges and Constraints

Access to the site was restricted and we had to install a temporary haul road across the school playing field. We had to ensure the school could safely access the playing field via gated crossing points.

Construction Processes and Methods

The building was a first-floor multi-classroom extension constructed with a steel frame, cast in-situ upper floor slab and the facade was clad in zinc. The East elevation was mostly constructed from curtain walling with large sections of glazing which had to be lifted in position via a special crane. The building was fully fitted out with M & E, air-conditioning, ventilation, toilets, walls and doors.

Environmental

As responsible contractors who are ISO14001 accredited, we completed environmental risk assessments, minimised waste and any waste was disposed of using licensed companies. Waste was sorted at the collection depot. Typically, 90% of waste is recycled.

    Kayleigh Williams: Wix

  • “As a team, Gipping met every expectation throughout the project. Steve James provided the exact role and attitude required for a project of this nature. The way he managed the works on site, given the difficult “live” environment was a credit to the firm. The overall management and support for Steve from Steve Offord and Joe was also a large factor in the smooth running of the scheme. All involved should be commended and are a credit to Gipping. Thank you for your part in a very successful scheme.”

Ben Mitchell, The Design partnership: Walden Place
