Seashore Village, Felixstowe, Suffolk

Gipping worked with East Suffolk Council to create the new Seashore Village on Felixstowe seafront.

The landscaped public space features 27 beach huts, trim trail, fish-shaped lawn, accessible toilets and changing facilities, ramps and a remodelled car park to provide better access.
The project presented some challenges with natural coastal and environmental issues but has enhanced Felixstowe as a seaside attraction.

Challenges and Constraints

Natural coastal and environmental issues, working with flood defences
Complex logistics presented by the site’s location for offloading and distribution of materials

Geometrical challenges in construction of beach huts using SIPs panels.

Construction Processes and Methods

Phase 1: Trim trail – complex hard landscaping scheme, including resin surfacing and paving with different zones for outdoor activities
Phase 2: Beach Hut Village – traditional masonry construction of toilet block and accessible beach huts using SIPs panels. Elaborate external works include multi-coloured rock panel cladding and a soft landscaping scheme created the image of a fish when viewed from above.
